Common Questions About Our Seat Belts | SeatbeltPlanet

Q: Why won't my seat belt retract?

A seat belt may retract slowly or fail to retract because the webbing is twisted, dirty, rubbing against interior trim, or entering the retractor at the wrong angle. The retractor may also have a weak or damaged return spring. Start by pulling the belt out and checking the full length of the webbing for twists, folds, contamination, or frayed edges. Make sure the belt can travel freely through the upper guide and that it is not rubbing against a seat, trim panel, or mounting bracket. Retractors are designed to operate within a specific mounting orientation. If a replacement retractor is installed at the wrong angle, it may remain locked or fail to retract correctly. Do not lubricate the webbing or spray lubricant inside the retractor. If the webbing is damaged or the internal retractor mechanism is not functioning properly, the assembly should be professionally evaluated or replaced.

Q: What are your hours of operation?

SeatbeltPlanet.com™ is open from 8 am to 5 pm (US Central) from Monday to Friday. We are also closed on federal holidays.

Q: My vehicle was in an accident and my seat belts are locked. Can you fix them?

The short answer is no. Your seat belts are designed to be single use items and should be replaced after an accident. We do not recommend reusing or repairing seat belts that were in an accident.

Modern seat belts use pyrotechnic pretensioners that fire when the airbags deploy.  By design, they lock the belt as an additional safety measure.  The seat belt should be replaced if the pretensioners have fired.

Q: My seat belt retracts, but it's very slow. Why?

The majority of slow retraction we see is due to the webbing. This is assuming the seat belt is installed correctly. Seat belts retractors are designed to work with new webbing.

As your vehicle ages, the webbing can become contaminated by dirt and oils, develop tiny frays and can get stiff. This is especially true in convertibles, Jeeps, or vehicles that are used in harsh environments. All these factors introduce more friction than the retractor spring can overcome. Replacing the webbing with new material can improve and will often completely solve slow retraction.

Though it is not common, sometimes we see slow retraction in new vehicles with new webbing. Mazda Miatas are notorious for this. Rewebbing may or may not improve retraction in these cases.
